The Structural Design for Wind and Seismic Loads course provides a structured and practical approach to understanding how wind and earthquake forces act on buildings and how these actions are translated into structural design loads in accordance with the Abu Dhabi Building Code (ADIBC 2013).
Across eight modules, participants examine wind-load behaviour, design parameters and code inputs, step-by-step wind-pressure calculations and worked design examples. The course then progresses to seismic hazard assessment, seismic design parameters, base-shear calculation, vertical force distribution, dynamic seismic-analysis methods and solved seismic-design applications.
The course places strong emphasis on code compliance, engineering judgement and practical design application, helping participants understand not only how to perform lateral-load calculations but also how to interpret their impact on structural systems, load paths, drift, torsional behaviour and overall building performance.
Who Should Enrol?
This course is designed for professionals involved in the analysis and design of buildings subjected to wind and seismic actions, including:
The course is particularly relevant to engineers seeking to strengthen their understanding of code-based lateral-load calculations and the engineering judgement required to select and interpret appropriate wind and seismic analysis methods.
Why This Course Matters
Wind and seismic actions can significantly influence the strength, stiffness, stability and serviceability of buildings. Unlike gravity loads, lateral loads vary with factors such as building height, exposure, geometry, site conditions, structural characteristics and dynamic response.
Incorrect assumptions regarding wind exposure, internal pressure, seismic site classification or analysis methodology can lead to inaccurate design forces and poor structural decisions. Engineers must therefore understand the complete process—from selecting the correct code inputs to calculating forces, tracing load paths and evaluating the resulting structural response.
This course develops that understanding through a progressive approach that connects wind-pressure calculations and seismic design parameters with base shear, drift, torsional irregularity and dynamic-analysis requirements, enabling participants to make more informed and code-compliant design decisions.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Why Professionals Choose This Course
The course connects code provisions with practical structural behaviour, helping engineers move beyond individual equations and understand how lateral loads influence the complete structural system.

Develop a clear understanding of how wind acts on buildings under the Abu Dhabi Building Code. Examine pressure and suction, roof uplift, wind-pressure zones, the distinction between the Main Wind-Force Resisting System (MWFRS) and components and cladding, static and dynamic wind effects, and common wind-design errors.
Identify and define the wind-design parameters required under ADIBC Section 1609. The module covers basic wind speed, directionality, exposure categories, terrain roughness, upwind distance, importance, building-enclosure classification, internal-pressure coefficients, building-height effects and topographic amplification.
Follow the complete wind-load calculation process from basic wind speed to design structural forces. Learn how to calculate velocity pressure, apply pressure coefficients, determine design wind pressures and transform those pressures into loads suitable for structural analysis and design.
Apply wind-design principles through detailed worked examples, including an industrial steel warehouse and a free-standing wall or sign panel. Examine internal-pressure effects, load-case generation, force distribution and the correct code-compliant application of wind forces.
Develop an understanding of seismic-design philosophy under ADIBC and ASCE 7. Explore seismic hazard maps, mapped spectral accelerations, site classification, soil-amplification factors, adjusted and design spectral accelerations, seismic design categories and their influence on structural design.
Learn how earthquake forces are determined using the Equivalent Lateral Force (ELF) method. Calculate seismic base shear, seismic response coefficients, effective seismic weight, fundamental period and vertical force distribution while examining overturning effects and directional seismic loading.
Understand when dynamic seismic analysis is required and how it differs from equivalent static methods. Examine Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA) and Time History Analysis (THA), including modal behaviour, mass participation, modal-combination methods, scaling requirements, ground-motion selection and interpretation of dynamic-analysis results.
Apply seismic-design concepts through fully solved structural examples. Calculate base shear and force distribution, assess shear-wall load allocation and story drift, perform code-compliance checks and evaluate torsional irregularity to connect seismic theory with practical structural-design decisions.
